“The Rule of Law Under Threat: Challenges and Responses”
Monday, July 1, 2019, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Villa Grebovka, Havlickovy Sady, Prague 2

Dear Friend,

Please join us for our upcoming Annual Meeting Program: “The Rule of Law Under Threat: Challenges and Responses” to be held in Prague on Monday, July 1, 2019, at the Villa Grebovka.

This substantive portion of our Annual Meeting allows us to explore, in depth, one of the most pressing issues now facing Central and Eastern Europe, namely the widespread efforts by governments to directly and indirectly undermine the rule of law. These threats include attacks on the independence of the judiciary, assaults on the free function of the press and civil society, and new limitations on the role of the legal profession. We also seek solutions to these trends, and will examine the responses that civil society and the legal profession can undertake to combat them.

Speakers will include the Prosecutor General of the Czech Republic, Pavel Zeman, longtime human rights advocate, Baroness Helena Kennedy (UK), crusading Russian defense lawyer Karinna Moskalenko, along with those on the front lines in Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia and the United States.

This event is one of our most important for the year for the CEELI Institute, allowing us to gather our board members, partner organizations and friends of the Institute, to look at pressing thematic issues, and the Institute’s role in addressing those challenges.

Luncheon will be served at the Villa.
